The Ibis as a Messenger

When we think of birds, oftentimes we think of a rooster that crows on a farm, or perhaps a sparrow or magpie bird letting us know that it is now a new day.

However, in ancient Egyptian reference, it is envisioned that God utilised the ibis bird to warn land inhabitants of the coming flood of The River Nile.

When we think of God, it is commonplace for us to think of God as our Protector, our Heavenly Father, or the One who grants our blessings. But it is rare that we think of God as our Warner or that He utilises animals, things, people, or places to warn of us things that require our attention and concern. Below, a collection of select scriptures that speak to the ibis as a messenger and how God warns in His Word.

Job 38:36 (NIV)

Who gives the ibis wisdom or gives the rooster understanding?¹

Hebrews 12:25-26 (ESV)

25 See that you do not refuse him who is speaking. For if they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, much less will we escape if we reject him who warns from heaven. 26 At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, “Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.”²

 Proverbs 16:18 (ESV)

Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.³

Genesis 7:1 (ESV)

Then the Lord said to Noah, “Go into the ark, you and all your household, for I have seen that you are righteous before me in this generation.⁴

Be well, be blessed, and flow in God-led trust, God’s Child.
